In continuation of the ongoing efforts to strengthen Media Borough’s sustainability efforts, Borough Council is considering an amendment to the Plastic Bag & Straw Ordinance to include a ban on Polystyrene (Styrofoam).
Polystyrene (Styrofoam)
Polystyrene, often referred to as Styrofoam, is used in food service for items like coffee cups, ice cream cups, and clamshell containers. While lightweight, polystyrene is non-biodegradable and breaks into small particles that persist in the environment for hundreds of years. These particles are difficult to clean up and can end up in waterways, harming wildlife. Polystyrene is also not accepted in most curbside recycling programs due to its low market value and contamination from food waste, making it a major contributor to plastic pollution.
Business Owners Meeting Recap
The Environmental Advisory Committee held a meeting to discuss a proposed ban on Styrofoam and black plastic use by restaurants in Media Borough, similar to their previous plastic bag ordinance. The committee engaged with local business representatives to gather feedback on the initiative, discussing sustainable practices, alternative packaging options, and potential challenges in implementation. The meeting also covered topics such as recycling issues, health concerns related to black plastic, and strategies for encouraging businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.
