A Message from the Transportation Committee:
Did you know that the "Week Without Driving Challenge” is coming up? This voluntary event takes place from September 30th to October 6th. To participate, simply don’t drive yourself in any car for an entire week. You can still be a passenger, use public transportation, walk, or bike. The goal is to experience life from the perspective of someone who cannot drive. If you do need to drive, take a moment to consider why that was your only option and what alternatives could be improved. Anyone can join—whether you’re an individual, part of an organization, an elected official, or a transportation professional.
The Week Without Driving challenge, brought to a national stage by America Walks in partnership with the Disability Mobility Initiative, is a powerful way to reflect on issues of mobility and accessibility. Originally inspired by non-drivers' experiences in Washington state, this challenge highlights the importance of making our cities accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to drive.
This challenge invites anyone to participate. There’s no “failure” if you end up needing to drive; the key is to reflect on why driving was the only viable option in that moment. The goal isn’t to shame anyone for driving or owning a car, but to better understand what life is like for non-drivers and how we can improve mobility for all.
Media Borough is a great example of how mobility plays a crucial role in creating vibrant, accessible, and economically successful communities. Our town’s amenities attract visitors, businesses, and residents, and it's no coincidence that these opportunities are so closely connected. The Transportation Committee of Borough Council would like to encourage everyone to think about why you choose to live, work, or visit a place like Media and consider taking the Week Without Driving challenge. Let’s use this opportunity to learn and advocate for more inclusive transportation options in our communities.
