Many of us already partly participate in Media’s Curbside Compost Program by putting out Yard Waste in brown bags on Wednesday mornings. Did you know that if the Borough already picks up your Yard Waste, you can also put out your Food Waste scraps (no meat, bones or dairy please) on Wednesday mornings as well? Come pick up a yellow bucket at Borough Hall (2nd floor hallway across from elevator) and join in on this environmentally beneficial practice.
Why participate? Food scrap composting:
Diverts food waste—up to 20% of your household garbage —out of the trash stream and recycles it into a valuable resource—nutrient-rich fertilizer used by local farmers and gardeners.
Reduces the Borough’s waste management costs (the tip fee at the compost farm is $30/ton lower than the tip fee at the County Transfer Station) and frees up Borough resources for other quality of life services.
Improves air quality. Right now, County trash is incinerated at a facility that has been named the #1 air polluter in southeastern Pennsylvania. Composting reduces the amount of trash we send to the incinerator.
Lowers energy consumption and greenhouse gases. The composting process requires fewer workhours than incineration and no fuel deliveries, further lowering greenhouse gases.
